Answers to your Questions

Why do I need a doula?

As a doula, I have the opportunity to provide continuous support beginning in pregnancy and continuing into your postpartum months. I am professionally trained to provide evidence-based physical, emotional, and informational support to both you and your partner was we embark on this journey together. Evidence shows that having a doula attend your birth is likely to result in lower caesarean rates, less use of medication and medical interventions, shorter labors, lowered pain scores, and higher APGAR scores for baby. In her article, "Evidence on Doulas," Rebecca Dekker provides an excellent review on the importance of a doula as part of your birth team.

Do you perform any clinical tasks?

As a doula, it is not within my scope of practice to perform any clinical tasks. I will, however, provide comfort, answer any questions, and support you in your choices while any clinical tasks are performed.

How will hiring you affect my partner’s role during the birth?

It is important to me that your partner's emotional and physical needs are met. I will guide your partner in how to support you in the best way that works for you as a couple. It is never my goal to replace a partner but rather to come alongside the family and ensure everyone feels prepared and empowered to take on their desired role in the birth team.

What are your interactions with medical staff like?

As your doula, I am first and foremost in the business of supporting your preferences and desires. I will help facilitate communication between you as the birthing person and medical staff to ensure that everyone is on the same page when it comes to your specific birth plan. I view medical staff as part of your birth team and hope to build meaningful relationships based on mutual respect and understanding.

What kind of births do you support?

The kind that you envision! I am trained and prepared to support you in a home birth, birthing center, non-medicated hospital birth, low intervention hospital birth, cesarean birth, etc.  My goal as a doula is to give you the resources to discover your desired birth and make informed choices for yourself and your baby.
